Curves. Color Balance. Selective Color. Levels. Photo Filters. Those are just a few ways of dealing with troublesome white balance. And they all DO work.

But it can take some doing. Even with our actions (which are awesome, we think) fixing really wonky white balance can be tedious at best.

So what can you do to free yourself from hours of drudgery in Photoshop?

Custom White Balance.

And to be specific, use an Expodisc.

Now we are not being paid or compensated in any way by Expodisc, but it is a product we use ourselves and love. So we wanted to pass this information along to all of those who follow us. But really, WHY would a company that sells actions tell you how to get away with using your actions less? Because we really believe that the cleaner of straight-out-of-camera image you start with, the more the actions can help you achieve your artistic dream, rather than just try and put band-aids on image boo-boos. And we are all about that. We really and truly want your images to be the best they can be in the quickest time possible.

But here is the thing. Read the instructions to the ExpoDisc when you get it. I’ll even give the summary here, just in case. The ExpoDisc is NOT a gray card. Instead is acts more like an incident light colorimeter. So rather than standing where you will be shooting from and taking a CWB shot towards your subject, you will stand BY your subject and point your camera with the ExpoDisc attached at your light source. And then use this as your Custom White Balance setting. It will neutralize the color casts of the light and give you clean, neutral color, which means you images will look like what you saw as you shot them. Skin tones won’t be a maddening process anymore. Now you can just add a little extra warmth or haze or color, a little contrast or pop and boom. Done. You can attend to artistically editing your images, rather than having to go image by image and get the tones normal. Doesn’t that sound fun? (And profitable, since you will not be spending so much time fixing issues.)

    Other people inspire me.     Love taking pictures and I consider myself a hobbyist.
    I got “bit” by the bug by my boss, Felicia Lewis of FML Photo Design.
    I loved the way she was able to capture my children being THEM and I wanted to be able to do it myself. So I started learning to shoot in Manual on my DSLR. Then I found your Facebook page and LOVED your actions and how they could just make SLIGHT changes to improve my pictures. I love how easy they are to use and how natural they all are!     Everything around me inspires me at one point or another. I want to be able to capture with the lens what I can imagine with my eye.

    I’m driving myself to be a better photographer. I don’t know if I would say that I inspire myself, but I want to prove to myself that I can do it even if some days I don’t believe that I can. Whether this turns out to be simply a hobby or perhaps jumping back in to it as a business, I want to do it for ME. In doing so, finding out about cool products this like the ExpoDisc or utilizing actions in post-processing or simply folling other photogs work and how they do things, I’m finding ways to be better.

    Every photographer whose work I see inspires me to be better. The great ones inspire me to be as good as they are and to try new things and the not so great ones inspire me to improve so that no one looks at my work and thinks it’s not so great.

    I follow various photographers on facebook, and seeing their amazing posts inspire me to try new poses, angles, and lighting situations. They all inspire me to be a better photographer: Kelly Willette, the photographers at Pure Photoshop Actions, Colleen at Chasing Dreams Photography, Corina Nielsen, and everyone at I Heart Photography, plus lots of others I can think of right now. Also, just being outside and seeing my children playing or the wonders of nature inspire me to be able to capture them in a way that shows their beauty best.

    I thought it says we aren’t to comment on the post? Yet that is one of the requirements for a point? So, I hope this is right cause I don’t want to mess up my point…lol

    Who inspires me to be a better photographer? I think I would say other photographers do. There is so much talent out there that it makes me really look at my work and want to be better.

    P.S. I can’t pin…you link isn’t working for me, neither is the link for where to buy it…not that I can afford it right now but I wanted to check out how much it is and bookmark it for later…but that link won’t open for me..is anyone else having this problem? Then when I click on my pin it bookmark it says something about the newtwork blogs can’t detect a large photo or video to pin? Weird!

    I don’t have one photographer in particular that inspires me. There are days that I am feeling so uninspired or can’t figure how to shoot a subject I will flip through flicker, 500px, or a magazine or through some books I have. This is especially true when I am asked to do family photos. I shoot landscapes not people. And for me it is really hard jumping from something I am comfortable with into something that would amount to wearing a wool sweater in the summertime in Hawaii. Uncomfortable.

    While I think there are many amazing photographers out there, the only one I compare myself to is me. Me 6 months ago, Me one year ago, Me two years ago and so on. Sometimes I go back and look at my old work just to see how far I have come. (And sometimes I cringe a little, but it’s good to see the progression of my work!)

    You ladies inspire me to be better!! I love that you’re always preaching to do things right IN CAMERA and then make minor tweaks afterward. It’s great to see photographers that learn the craft the right way!

    My other inspirations include Blair Phillips and Amanda Holloway. Both of them came from humble beginnings and are doing HUGE things now. It just goes to show that if you work hard, you can achieve your dreams :)

    What inspires me…I always want every picture of my kids when I would take them for professional pictures and as much as I loved them could not afford them all. My inspiration is to take great photos that you can afford to get all of! I just want to use my love of taking pictures to make someone else happy. I am photographing my first wedding by myself this October. A good friend of mine who always likes all of my pictures asked me to photograph her daughters wedding, it will be my gift to her.     I have several good friends who are amazing photographers, and I’m constantly looking at the work of people that I admire. I have in my mind what my ideal image is, and I strive for that. I’m not sure what the exact answer to “Who inspires me” is in all of this, but the answer is in there some where!

    my kids inspire me to be a better photographer as well as myself! i am always wanting to improve my work so when i see how far ive came from when i started i just strive do to better! in doing so i am able to capture even more precious memories of my babies and admire them for years to come!!! :D

    I inspire myself to a better photographer! I don’t say this in a selfish, conceited way but instead mean that I am constantly pushing myself to learn more, improve consistently, and break out of my comfort zones. Of course there are countless incredibly talented industry leaders out there who also provide inspiration, but I believe I have to motivate myself first :)

    I am inspired by so many people but have to say first it is my family who love my pictures of them even though I am just a beginner and then I am double inspired everytime I see a great picture on someones blog or facebook or a site like this.

    I tried to leave a comment on my entry but it wouldn’t let me. I get inspiration from myself by looking back at photos I took a year ago and see how I have improved. I know I still have a long way to go but I am inspired to challenge myself and learn something new every week and watch how my photography improves. Thank you to the team from Pure for reminding me that I shouldn’t compare myself to other photographers but to compare myself to the photographer I used to be.

    My daughter is first and foremost my biggest inspiration. Second is my love for photography. I constantly strive to improve in any way that I can. It is my own personal therapy.

    There are so many photographers out there who inspire me with their knowledge and passion for this industry. I have learned so much from those few awesome people who love to share their knowledge with the newer photogs out there. While they are all so inspiring I have to say the biggest place of inspiration or drive for me comes from those who think I cant or who have refused to support me at all. Knowing that there are people out there who want me to fail has actually had a huge impact on me to the point of choosing to succeed just to prove that I can and that I am awesome at what I do! Negativity can be turned into the inspiration for my next show stopping image.

    My son does. I took up photography before I was even trying to have a baby so I could take good pictures of him myself. Then, I fell in love with photography! But now that I have a son (who is 7 months) I want to capture every moment and he makes me want to learn everything I can to make his everyday pictures stunning :)

    I tend to push myself a lot, so me being my own inspiration to do better is the most accurate answer. But I love caputuring memories, and celebrating happy moments in peoples’ lives! I also think it is important to be happy yourself!

    My boyfriend and my family inspire me to become a better photographer. I took a digital photography class at my College, and the teacher taught me some amazing things. I have been practicing, and noticing that the slightest settings with white balance, iso, or light settings make the world of a difference. I am no where near perfect, or fantastic, but i get better and better day by day.

    The person that inspires me to be a better photographer well I think there is a list!! Where I live there is a photographer by the name of Emma Nayler and I love getting inspiration from her but I really love following other photographers blogs and facebook pages they are all so inspiring :-)

    My mom inspires me to be a better photographer every day, she inspires me with everything. Right now I am still in college and she has helped me accomplish all of my goals that I want to achieve. She is the reason why I was able to start my photography business and the reason why I continued with it. I’m graduating in May and can’t wait to see what happens with there for my business! :)

    I just needed a release to all my pent up flustrations. I chose photography because I love to meet new people and see them thrilled when they receive their prints. Life is good in photographyland, I just wish I lived in an area that would help me go full time so I could quit my “other job”

    Other photographers that I admire are inspiration to me to get my photos just right, perfection. I am a perfectionist and never say my pictures are perfect, I always find something wrong with them. My clients are also my biggest inspiration. I get so many referrals from them, it inspires me to be better each day!!

    It seems a little silly but I think my main inspiration to be a better photographer comes from looking at how much I grow and get better every time I apply myself to learning a new photographic skill or technique. Knowing that I CAN do it and if I stick at it I WILL do it! I learnt photography at uni in the days of film and darkrooms, wanting to transfer those skills to my new ‘digital darkroom’ is challenging but I CAN and WILL do it!

    Inspires my photography? You definatly do. I follow a lot of unique artist who inspire me. The beautiful weather here in SC inspires me to get outside and shoot. I constantly want to be better and try new things. I’m not a terribly competative person but I do want to be better.

    I inspire myself to become a better photographer. I know it sounds vain, but it’s really not. When I look back on how far I’ve come then reflect on my current vision I totally get inspired to be even better. Seeing my own personal growth is more inspiring than anything anyone can ever tell me, because in the end, it’s all about overcoming the little voice in our own heads.

    Not sure if I did that right! Looking at others people’s photos (on forums, flickr, facebook groups) inspires me to improve my skills. Creating a record of my family inspires me to keep shooting.
